Methanogenesis from Mineral Carbonates, a Potential Indicator for Life on Mars

چکیده
Priorities for the exploration of Mars involve identification and observation biosignatures that indicate existence life on planet. The atmosphere composition sediments suggest suitability anaerobic chemolithotrophic metabolism. Carbonates are often considered as morphological biosignatures, such stromatolites, but have not been potential electron acceptors. Within present study, hydrogenotrophic methanogen enrichments were generated from had received significant quantities lime industrial processes (lime kiln/steel production). These then supplemented with calcium carbonate powder or marble chips a sole source carbon. microcosms saw release inorganic carbon into liquid phase, which was subsequently removed, resulting in generation methane, 0.37 ± 0.09 mmoles methane observed steel sediment powder. dominated by Methanobacterium sp., whilst lime/marble more diverse, containing varying proportions Methanomassiliicoccus, Methanoculleus Methanosarcina sp. In all microcosm experiments, acetic acid detected phase. Our results methanogenesis should be when determining Mars.

Subsurface Halophiles: An Analogue for Potential Life on Mars
Recent discoveries have reopened the idea that, in the past, Mars had a period of wetness where conditions were similar to those on Earth [1]. If this was the case then it is feasible that these environments may have harboured life. The martian surface today is dry, cold and heavily bombarded by UV radiation, making it an environment unsuitable for any known terrestrial life [2]; the martian su...
متن کاملHygroscopic salts and the potential for life on Mars.
Hygroscopic salts have been detected in soils in the northern latitudes of Mars, and widespread chloride-bearing evaporitic deposits have been detected in the southern highlands. The deliquescence of hygroscopic minerals such as chloride salts could provide a local and transient source of liquid water that would be available for microorganisms on the surface. This is known to occur in the Ataca...
متن کاملGlobal Mineral Maps on Mars
Introduction: Determining the mineralogy of Mars constitutes an essential part of understanding of the present and past condition of the surface. After two years of operation, the OMEGA imaging spectrometer on-board Mars Express has achieved near-global coverage with spatial resolution varying between 300 m and 4.8 km depending on the pericentre altitude of the spacecraft's highly elliptical or...
متن کاملThe Case of the Lacking Carbonates and the Emergence of Early Life on Mars
The mineralogical characterization of Mars by different exploration missions, provides a new image of the earliest conditions that prevailed on the planet surface. The detection of extensive deposits of phyllosillicates has been considered to be as a result of the production of hydrated silicates through alteration and precipitation under neutral to sub-alkaline conditions. Although extensive d...
